HOTCHKISS MOBILES Chaperone

The "Chaperone" wind sculpture is composed of solid copper shapes brazed onto steel armatures. A unique design element is the two pivotal balance pieces that turn in the breeze on pointed rods that are a part of the large "S" form of this design. Brilliant colorations of red, yellow, purple and blue are visible on the metal surface. This effect is acheived by heating and rapidly cooling the metal resulting in the instant appearance of colors in the metal. The artist then lacquers each piece to preserve this unique finish. The steel base is powder-coated black to inhibit corrosion. Joel Hotchkiss has been designing contemporary kinetic art and mobiles since 1976. His work has been sold in numerous museum stores including the Guggenheim, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
