VITRA Organic Chair
Charles Eames & Eero Saarinen, 1940
The influence of Charles and Ray Eames was fundamental to the
development of Vitra. Its activity as a furniture manufacturer began in
1957 with the production of their designs. Yet it was not only the
products of Charles and Ray Eames that left their mark on Vitra. With
their approach to and understanding of design, they made an ongoing
contribution to the values and goals of the company. The Organic Chair is a comfortable small reading
chair and was made in 1940 as a contribution to the New York MoMA's
"Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition. Formally speaking it
was ahead of its time, but owing to the lack of manufacturing
techniques, never went into series production. It was not until after
1950 that it became possible to manufacture larger quantities of
organically shaped seat shells and market them. The first were chairs
such as the Eames' iconic Plastic Armchair or Eero Saarinen's Tulip Chair. Material: laminated seat shell, polyurethane upholstery, beech legs, stained back. We are happy to provide fabric samples on request.
