VITRA How High the Moon Chair
Shiro Kuramata (1934-2001) combined the Japanese concept of fine art with his fascination with contemporary Western culture. Through his intriguing choice of materials and graceful use of proportions, Kurmata was able to express a highly refined sense of space and lightness in his poetic designs. With "How High the Moon," Kuramata succeeded in reducing shape to a
minimum. Backrest, armrests and seat have been reduced to simple cubic
forms and executed in expanded metal. The shimmering, dematerialized
surface is reminiscent of pale, glowing moonlight, the name is borrowed
from a song by Duke Ellington. Constructed of expanded steel mesh covered with a paint containing nickel; it's high reflectance causes it to seemingly dissolve in light, minimizing it's impact on the surroundings.
