CARL HANSEN Hans Wegner CH 401 Kastrup Chair
At the Carl Hansen & Son Factory in Aarup,
Denmark, the only chairs
produced are those that were designed by Hans J. Wegner. Although the
plant has been outfitted with the latest in high quality machinery,
the furniture crafted there is still made according to traditional
manners by a staff of highly dedicated people. The Kastrup ("Airport") Chair, was designed by Hans
J. Wegner in 1958 for Copenhagen's Kastrup Airport. Since then, it's been part
of the interior of international terminals, public offices, hotels and
private homes in several versions and with different upholstery. This design adheres
to three simple but fundamental characteristics of Wegner’s work;
those of comfort, shape and fine craftsmanship. The structure is based on a blind frame in solid beech wood and stainless steel legs. The workmanship and interplay of its components were
deciding factors when the Kastrup Chair won an “Interior Innovation
Award” at the 2004 IMM Cologne International Furniture Fair.
