VITRA Butterfly Stool
Sori Yanagi, 1954
In his lifetime, Japanese artist Sori Yanagi was renowned for the marriage of East and West with his designs. Active in the postwar era, Yanagi’s work embodies the optimism of the new industrial age without losing the delicacy and lightness of traditional Japanese design. The organic forms of the mid-century mesh seamlessly with his own sensibilities, and appear repeatedly in his prolific career. The concept of symmetry is beautifully manifested in the joined wings of the Butterfly Stool. Executed using the pressed plywood molding technique invented by Charles and Ray Eames, this graceful stool marries ancient forms with modern Western materials; first manufactured in 1954, it now resides in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Lacquered molded plywood, brass fittings.
