Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) was primarily an artist and a sculpturer. His gardens and fountains were transformations meant to bring out the beauty their locations had always possessed. He believed that through architecture and organic design, one could better understand the struggle with nature. Noguchi developed highly abstract, sculptural furniture for such prestigious manufacturers as Herman Miller and Knoll; his 1954 "tornado table" reflects his fascination with formal qualities of construction and natural landscape; this table is now manufactured by Modernica to exact original specifications.
