VITRA Prismatic Table
Isamu Noguchi, 1957
Isamu Noguchi is considered a universal talent with a creative oeuvre
that went beyond sculpture to encompass stage sets, furniture,
lighting, interiors as well as outdoor plazas and gardens. His
sculptural style is indebted to a vocabulary of organic forms and
exerted a sustained influence on the design of the 1950s. Noguchi's Prismatic Table was produced toward the end of Noguchi's furniture design phase. This faceted aluminum table was designed for ALCOA as part of their Forecast Program in the promotion of new uses for aluminum. While the original version had straight legs, he developed a second version by multiplying the number of folds, resulting in a cubist shape that recalls Japanese origami. Originally available in limited edition red, it is now being produced solely in black and white.
