The popularity of plastics and fiberglass in Finnish furniture design lasted from the late 60's to the mid 70's, and Eero Aarnio was at the forefront of the trend. Aarnio is quoted as saying that "excellent design means constant renewal, realignment and growth." Introduced in 1991, the Copacabana is one of his most iconoclastic designs, and was conceived for both indoor and outdoor use. Like his earlier Globe and Pastil chairs, it's curvaceous form visually accentuates the gleaming surface qualities of molded fiberglass reinforced polyester. As much sculpture as a table, Copacabana makes an artful statement; central to it's appeal is the sense of fun it conveys to the individual viewing it or, better yet, sitting on it!
